a sunny marathon day

Off and on throughout the day, the Kentucky Horse Park’s cross-country course was bathed in sunshine. So you may be wondering why the drivers and navigators in the photos below are all bundled up against, um, the cold? What you can’t see is the wind that was practically howling across the KHP’s fields, making it feel like winter had suddenly set in, despite the bright sunshine. But it was a successful day nonetheless, and a beautiful day on the marathon course.

RESULTS: Keith Angstadt won the marathon in the Preliminary Single Pony class, and he’s leading the class heading into the cones phase. Colten Parker won the marathon in the  Preliminary Pair Ponies class, but Mary Phelps maintains her overall lead going into cones. Nifty Hamilton won the marathon in the Preliminary Single Horse class, maintaining her overall lead after dressage. In the Preliminary Pair Horses class, Jose Hernandez won the marathon, putting him ahead of Beverly Patrick in the overall standings. Doris Leacy (Intermediate Single Pony) and Boots Wright (Intermediate Pair Ponies) were the only ones in their classes on the marathon, so they both “won” with marathon scores of 69.20 and 74.64, respectively. Among the Intermediate Single Horses, Carrie Ostrowski won the marathon phase, but Scott Adcox maintained his overall lead. In the USEF National Single Pony Championship, Paul Maye both won the marathon and maintained his overall lead to head into the cones phase. In the USEF National Pair Ponies Championship, Amy Cross won the marathon and kept the overall lead she’d set after dressage. Sterling Graburn is the only competitor in the Advanced Single Horse class, but he had the best marathon score among all the Advanced-level drivers: 63.20. Among the Advanced Horse Pairs, Rae Fischer (Canada) won the marathon, but Misdee Wrigley Miller maintained her overall lead in the class and in the USEF National Pairs Championship. Here are few of my favorite photos from today’s marathon (shown in no particular — well, alphabetical — order) … Scott Adcox; Sterling Graburn; Kari Harmon; Misdee Wrigley Miller, who’s driving this weekend in the USEF National Pair Championship after having competed with a four-in-hand at the FEI World Equestrian Games just last month; and junior driver Colten Parker.
